Crush Durex Copywriting Into 8 Formulas: Claude Code Skill Makes Copywriting Outsourcing Worthless

Crushing the Durex Copywriting Method Into 8 Formulas: Claude Code Skill Just Made Copywriting Outsourcing Worthless

In 2025, hiring a brand copywriter for a single tagline runs anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000. A small brand owner needs a $30,000 budget just for slogans, plus another $50,000 for holiday campaign posters. That’s the content market over the past ten years.

The real problem isn’t the price. It’s that you pay a premium and still get mediocre work.

Durex’s 2011 to 2017 run is the closest thing copywriting has to a “golden age.” They could spin a double entendre out of a marshmallow, and a single real-time marketing poster could go viral across the entire internet. In 2014, their “Turn Off to Turn On” campaign on YouTube pulled 62 million views, 3.9 billion impressions, and 3.2 billion media exposures. Nielsen’s brand effect study showed brand awareness and purchase intent each rose by 2,000 basis points (data source: Think With Google case library). Those numbers came from humans, not AI. Seven years of hand-built methodology.

That methodology was locked inside Durex. Outsiders never got access.

In 2026, someone broke it open. A GitHub repo called xiaoma-durex-copywriter lists the full set of 8 formulas from Durex’s golden era. It also bundles the visual side (24 reference images, 6 color palettes, typography rules) into a Claude Code Skill. Install it, type “ride the trending topic,” and Claude produces copy in Durex’s style and a poster following the visual rules. Anyone becomes an entire brand department.

That’s the playbook people charge $5,000 for. Here’s the path.

1. Why Now: Copywriting Methodology Can Finally Be Coded

For twenty years, brand copywriting methodology lived inside a handful of 4A agency creative directors’ heads. Apprenticeships were the only way in: shadow, imitate, fail for three years before you earned the right to call yourself a copywriter.

The AI era changes that. For the first time, you can encode a methodology explicitly. Three things had to line up:

LLM capability has to be good enough to follow style instructions and stick to visual rules. The Skill system in Claude Code and Claude.ai has to be mature enough to bolt domain knowledge and workflows onto the model. Someone has to sit down and turn Durex’s original images, palettes, and formulas into markdown.

xiaoma-durex-copywriter is the first finished product to bring all three together. It’s not the only one. GitHub also has Rob Palmer’s claude-code-copywriting-skills (5 free skills covering sales pages, ad copy, landing pages, compliance checks), doing the same kind of work in the “copywriting methodology + AI” space.

The Durex repo stands out for a hard reason: it goes deep on one style instead of broad on ten. Other skills hand you a generic copywriting toolbox. This one hands you the methodology of one specific company.

2. 8 Formulas: Mastering One Style Beats Learning 100 Generic Tactics

The repo compresses Durex’s copywriting method into 8 formulas, ordered from easy to hard:

# Formula Core Tactic Migration Example
1 Homophonic Substitution Swap everyday expressions with brand words or homophonic keywords “Adapt with AI or step aside”
2 Numerical Double Entendre One number referring to two things at once “24 times a year”
3 Semantic Hijacking Steal an industry term’s common meaning and redirect it to your product “Cutting costs” meaning both expenses and “notebooks”
4 Scenario Transplant Drop a personified product into an everyday scene Common in holiday marketing
5 Character Deconstruction Split and reassemble Chinese characters to create a pun Unique advantage of Chinese script
6 Antithesis / Do’s and Don’ts Parallel couplets or juxtaposed good vs. bad omens “Do: Get hands-on. Don’t: Bookmark and let it gather dust”
7 Poetic Style Three stanzas of imagery + one closing line (long-form copy) Brand stories, anniversaries
8 Reverse Restraint Max 5 times a year; one serious post beats a year of jokes “Tools will replace tools, but they won’t replace clear thinkers”

Out of all 8, #8 is the one worth the most. Formulas 1 through 7 teach you how to pull flashy stunts. Formula 8 teaches restraint. That is the reason Durex could drop only a handful of “serious” posts between 2011 and 2017 and still get screenshotted across the internet. 365 days a year, one day of serious beats 364 days of clowning.

Once these formulas are in a Skill, the workflow is short. In Claude Code, type “ride the trending topic” or “write like Durex.” The Skill walks you through four steps: confirm brand voice, select formula, generate candidates, check the double-layer semantics. One prompt in, 4 to 8 copy options out.

3. The Visuals: Forging the Rules into a Reusable 3-Part Toolkit

The repo also splits the visual side into three things: a subject decision tree, six color palettes, and typography rules.

The subject decision tree works like this. If you have a product that can serve as a visual metaphor, center it at 15–35% of the frame. If you don’t want it that prominent, drop the product to a 5–10% corner badge and let props take over. If there’s no product at all, use props as the main subject (the most frequent approach) or go with pure typography. Real human models almost never appear. Tested distribution: product ~30%, props ~40%, pure typography ~30%.

The six palettes: Brand Red #E2001A, Midnight Blue #16233F/#0E1A2E, Studio Black #000000, Pink Gradient #FCEDF1→#E8558F, Warm Rice White #F1EBE0 + Vermilion #C8102E, and Trend-Jacking Contrast (use the target brand’s color).

The typography rules: copy sits in the top or left third, left-aligned. Body text width is about 3.5%–4.5% of the canvas. Keywords scale up 1.65x to 1.75x and take the brand color. Subheads run at 0.6x body size, gray with extra letter-spacing. The logo stays anchored bottom-center, always on negative space. Whitespace ratio stays at 50% or higher.

A note on copyright: the repo includes only 24 low-resolution (under 800px) sample images from Durex, owned by Durex / Reckitt Benckiser. Strictly for studying and commenting on advertising creative methods, not for commercial use. The code part (assets/) is MIT-licensed. You can study the rules. You can’t republish their images to sell product. For your own work, shoot your own visuals or generate them with AI.

4. Install the Skill and Run It in 3 Steps

1
2
git clone https://github.com/crawfordxx/xiaoma-durex-copywriter.git \
~/.claude/skills/xiaoma-durex-copywriter

Optional dependencies, pick one: npm i @napi-rs/canvas (Canvas layout) or pip install playwright (HTML layout). After install, trigger phrases:

  • Write a copy
  • Ride the trending topic
  • Holiday poster
  • Draft a slogan
  • Promote a course
  • Write like Durex

Run it in three steps:

  1. Run a test. Pick a product or service you actually sell. Feed it your brand name plus a one-line brief (for example, “Black Friday: write poster copy riding the trend for XX face mask”). Let the Skill spit out 4 to 8 options.
  2. Pick the formula. Find the one that hits the double-layered meaning you wanted. Keep that. Trash the rest.
  3. Apply the visuals. Use the subject tree, palettes, and typography rules above to produce the image, whether you shoot it yourself or generate it with AI.

Cost structure: the Skill is free. Claude Code is a monthly subscription (Pro at $20/month is enough for solo use). Visual generation through GPT-4o or Midjourney runs a few cents to a few dimes per image. A complete “trend-jacking poster = copy + visual” workflow costs less than $0.30 per run.

5. How to Monetize It

The Durex copywriting methodology’s real value isn’t “writing better copy yourself.” It’s selling it as a deliverable.

Path 1 is client services. List “brand copywriting + holiday posters” on Xiaohongshu, Mercari, or Fiverr. Charge $800 to $2,000 per project with a 95%+ margin (your only cost is Claude and a few hours of your time). Copyhackers’ 2025 data puts freelance copywriting project fees between $1,000 and $7,000, with senior day rates reaching $600.

Path 2 is your own social accounts. Use the same method to write viral headlines and posters for your own channels, then cash in on ad revenue or affiliate commissions. Most passive of the three paths, but the longest tail.

Path 3 is selling the Skill. Take xiaoma-durex-copywriter (or similar), add your real-world execution experience, and package it as an “AI Copywriting Methodology Toolkit.” Sell it on Gumroad or Mercari for $9.9 to $99. Low price × high traffic is the classic digital product model.

You can run all three at the same time. The Skill doesn’t care which channel pays you.

6. $5,000 vs $2

$5,000 is what an agency charges to write a single slogan. $2 is what it costs you to generate a full “copy + visual” package once the Skill is installed. That $4,998 in the middle is the daily arbitrage you pocket once you learn this.

Durex’s copywriting method used to live inside one creative director’s head. Today you install a Skill, type one sentence, and get 4 to 8 candidates. That’s “methodology-as-a-service” leverage, and it’s the cleanest entry ticket for AI side hustles in 2026.

Stop paying $5,000 for a slogan.
